Applying for a refund
The New Zealand tax year runs from 1 April to 31 March in the following year. For example if you select 2007, the 2007 tax year runs from 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2007. yourtaxback.co.nz can check up to the last 5 income tax years to see if you are owed a refund by IR. Select the years that you would like us to check at Step 2 of the application process. -
IRD Number
An IRD number is a unique identification number from Inland Revenue; you will usually have the same IRD number for your whole life. You need to have an IRD number before yourtaxback.co.nz can process a refund for you. Your IRD number will be either 8 or 9 digits depending on when it was issued, and will be in the range of 10-000-000 to 999-999-999. Don’t have an IRD number? Learn how to get one here -
Why we need your postal address
yourtaxback.co.nz needs your postal address for two reasons, firstly to help verify your identity with IR, and secondly to ensure that any correspondence from us including refund cheque’s gets to you. -

Working for Families Tax Credits
Working for Families Tax Credits (previously called family assistance) is a payment made based on your income, on an ongoing basis for each dependant child aged 18 or younger. -
What is self-employment?
Self-employment is a situation where a person works for him/herself, independent of another person or organisation, there is usually no employer/employee relationship. A self employed person usually operates as a sole trader. -
What is partnership income?
A partnership is where two or more people carry on business together with the view to making a profit. Partnership income refers to your share of any income derived by the partnership. -
What is Overseas Income?
Overseas income is all income sourced from outside New Zealand. This can include overseas investments such as foreign dividends received, income from working abroad, foreign pensions and interest. -
What is a Shareholder Salary?
This is any salary received from a company in which you own shares. -
What is Rental Income?
Rental income is income derived from owning a property and renting it out to a third party. The most common form of rental income comes from residential rental ownership. -
Should I include Trust or Estate income in my Tax Return?
Yes. Any taxable distributions received from a Trust or Estate should be included in your income tax return. -
What is a loss from a Loss from a Look Through Company (LTC)?
This is any losses received from an LTC in which you own shares. -
How can yourtaxback.co.nz pay my refund?
yourtaxback.co.nz can pay your refund by either direct credit into your bank account or by Cheque. You need to select your payment option at Step 4. If you select payment by Cheque this will be sent to the postal address supplied at Step 1. The bank account details you supply are used as part of the verification process, it is important that the account details supplied are correct. If you receive a refund it will be paid less the yourtaxback.co.nz filing fee of 15% (minimum of $10, maximum of $500 per refund for PTS clients, or $75 minimum fee for IR3 clients) and will be directed credited into the bank account supplied. -
Am I a New Zealand Tax Resident?
You are considered a resident of New Zealand for taxation purposes if you have a permanent place of abode in New Zealand, or you have lived in New Zealand for at least 183 days in any 12 month period. You are considered a non-resident of New Zealand for taxation purposes if you are absent from New Zealand for 325 days or more in any 12 month period. You are considered non-resident from the first day of absence. -
Part year returns
A part year return is for a period up to 183 days in which you did not earn New Zealand sourced income and were not considered a tax resident of New Zealand. Any example of this would be if you left New Zealand to work overseas for half the year. -
Why is it important to file a part year return?
It is important to file a part year return as you may be due a refund. This could be due to seasonal workers being taxed on a schedular tax rate higher than their marginal tax rate. -
New Zealand Interest
What is Interest Income?
Interest income is New Zealand sourced interest received from a bank or financial institution. Any interest you receive over $200 from a bank or financial institution during the income tax year will be summarised and sent you in April of the given year. This interest will need to be included in any return prepared by yourtaxback.co.nz on your behalf. -
What if I did not receive any Interest Income?
If you did not receive any interest income in the periods you want yourtaxback.co.nz to check leave the interest income details in Step 3 empty. -
Where can I get details of any interest paid to me?
You will need to contact the bank or institution that paid you the interest directly. -
Do I need to include interest income received in my application?
Yes, please include any interest received in your application. -
New Zealand Dividends
What is a dividend?
A dividend is a payment made to shareholders by a company in which they own shares. Any dividends you receive in an income year will be summarised by the company, this information is posted to you at the same time you receive any dividend payments. -
What if I did not receive any dividend income?
If you did not receive any dividend income in the periods you want yourtaxback.co.nz to check leave the dividend income details in step 3 empty. -
Do I need to include dividend income received in my application?
Yes, please include any dividends and details of tax credits received (ICA, DWT etc.) in your application. -
Privacy Policy
yourtaxback.co.nz takes client confidentiality very seriously, we will only disclose your information to Inland Revenue and VEDA in order to verify your identity and process your refund claim. All client information is handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1993. yourtaxback.co.nz requires certain personal information such as your address and IRD number to calculate any refunds due, and to post these to you. It is important that the information supplied is correct. -
Incorrect Email Address
yourtaxback.co.nz requires an email address to communicate with you throughout the refund process. If there is an error with the email address supplied and we cannot contact you by email we will contact you by post for any additional information required to calculate your refund.
